Initiatives

These are some of the initiatives that 545 Queen Street is proud to be a part of.

Green Power

Since January 2009, our GreenPower partner, Origin Energy, has been supplying approximately 10-15% of 545 Queen Street's base building electricity from wind and solar sources in NSW, VIC and SA. From 1 July 2009, this will be This will be increased to 25%.
Our Recycling Program

Paper, cardboard and glass are recycled. The recycling of these items is a practice which all Tenants are encouraged to participate in. The centre operates a "Single Bin" system whereby individual Tenants are provided with a bin for each desk which is for "Recyclable Paper Only". A large "Blue Bin" is placed adjacent to the Goods Lift on each floor for large quantities of recyclable paper.

It is suggested that another large Bin be placed in photocopying rooms for "Recyclable Paper Only". Cardboard should be separated from plastic wrappings and polystyrene etc., cardboard should be flattened and stacked adjacent to the goods lift. Cleaners will collect this each evening. Separate bins for non-recyclable rubbish should be placed in the kitchen by the Tenant. The Bins for recyclable products will be emptied as required and the non-recyclable rubbish will be emptied daily by the cleaners.

Should a tenant have large amounts of general waste or require a skip, please contact the Tenant Services Manager on (02) 9261 3041 to arrange for a quotation. The Building Manager will supply the appropriate bin labels for glass and non-recyclable waste to assist the Recycling Program. Reduction Tenants can participate in the Reduction Program by focusing on minimising the consumption of paper products, energy and water. Paper usage should be minimised by double-sided photocopying. Electricity should be conserved by switching off lights when not required.

Disposal of Substances The centre is serviced by grease traps, located in the basement of the building. All tenants must ensure that their waste lines from additional tea rooms and kitchens are connected to the grease trap via the waste line which is located in the main Kitchen riser. This is a requirement of the Trade Waste Authority. The disposal of chemicals, grease and other toxic substances must be done in an approved manner and under no circumstances are to enter the building's drainage systems.

The Trade Waste Authority imposes strict penalties on persons or companies who pollute the environment.
CitySwitch Green Office

CitySwitch Green Office is a national tenant energy management program run in partnership between the cities of Sydney, North Sydney, Parramatta, Willoughby, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane and state government agencies, the Department of Environment & Climate Change NSW and Sustainability Victoria.

The program works with tenants to improve office energy efficiency, thereby reducing the CO2 emissions attributed to global warming. One of the main reasons for choosing this way to save energy is that tenants can influence up to 50 percent of total energy use in office buildings.

CitySwitch Signatories commit to achieve and maintain an accredited 4 stars or higher NABERS Energy tenancy rating. NABERS Energy measures and rates a tenancy's actual yearly greenhouse gas emissions using 12 months of energy bills.

The commitment can be achieved by simple, easy to implement actions which increase energy efficiency such as:
  • installing energy efficient lighting and office equipment
  • changing to flat screen monitors
  • activating sleep mode on equipment where applicable
  • upgrading lighting controls including occupancy sensors and timers
  • purchasing GreenPower from renewable sources
  • educating staff on the benefits of energy efficiency
